Barnstaple is one of several BID towns in the South West and since achieving BID status, has set out to begin delivering the 5 year BID Business Plan, which encompasses the wishes of traders as to what they would like to spend the BID levy on to improve their trading environment.
So far, BID has delivered extra Christmas lights in the town centre for the second year running, put on an amazing Christmas Light Switch on, drawing thousands of people into Barnstaple, and supported other projects along the way such as: Barnstaple Grand Prix, North Devon Foodfest, Devon Wildlife Festival, The Barnstaple Carnival, New Year’s Eve Celebrations on The Square, Green Lanes Fashion Show, to name but a few. We have also arranged for street theatre to entertain shoppers on Thursday late night shopping over the festive period. Locally based marketing company, Artavia, came up with a new branding for the commercial heart of Barnstaple and this was launched at the Christmas Light Switch on, followed by lamp post banners on the main arterial routes into town- marketing is at the forefront to encourage visitors to come into our town, and there will be more to follow. New street signage is soon to be installed, which links into the colour co-ordinated Barnstaple Town Centre Map & Business Guide that BID Barnstaple produced earlier this year.
Work has begun on the installation of the new finger posts for Barnstaple town centre as part of the BID wayfinding project. The five year BID business plan, which was created following extensive consultation and feedback from traders, earmarks new and improved signage to key landmarks as being of crucial importance to the town centre in order to help move people around the town and show what is available. Behind the scenes, BID Barnstaple have also been liaising and working closely with North Devon Council to assist traders & shoppers alike with free car parking in the run up to Christmas. This comes into effect from 2pm-6pm in NDC run car parks across North Devon, each Thursday, Friday & Saturday for two weeks before Christmas, commencing Thursday 15th December and ends Saturday 24th December. Shoppers and retailers in Barnstaple town centre are invited to be part of the recycling programme Every Can Counts.
